Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) talks with head coach Stephanie White

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White was hyped after her team secured a big win against the defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces, on Sunday.

The Fever came out to play against an A’ja Wilson-less Aces side. It was a strong team performance for the Fever, who were without cornerstone superstar Caitlin Clark. Indiana secured a convincing road win at T-Mobile Arena, 84-68.

This was Clark’s second straight game on the sidelines due to a lingering back injury. She also sat out on June 27 against the Los Angeles Sparks. The Fever also won that one in a blowout, 111-87.

Coach White addressed her team inside the locker room after their win against the Aces. The former WNBA Coach of the Year was understandably delighted with her squad’s performance on the evening.

“Alright y’all, great job. Great job,” she started. “We did a lot of great things.

“I’m sure this has to be a season-low seven turnovers. You take care of the ball, you give yourself a chance, right?”

White also sounded off about how the team outrebounded the Aces and stifled their opponents on the defensive end.

“All of that matters,” White continued. “We were resilient early in the first quarter, and then we continued to climb throughout the rest of the game. Okay, really proud of you guys.

“That’s a great win. It’s a great effort.”

Indiana Fever fans read into Stephanie White’s postgame comments

Some fans on Instagram, however, could not help but focus on one specific part of White’s message. When the Indiana coach highlighted the team’s season-low turnovers, some supporters interpreted it as a veiled shot directed at Clark, who currently averages a team-worst 4.6 turnovers per game.

“Damn she came in hot. That was definitely CC shade 😩” a comment on Instagram read.

“Season low on turnovers… our beloved wasn’t in the game to put up her 5 or 6 TO’s… thats why 😂 i love Caitlin but it gets ridiculous. Great job tonight girls!” another said.

“I like the beautiful CC diss…has to be a season low…7 turnovers…direct shot at CC…good [expletive] SW. That team plays superb without her..keep her seated,” a user wrote.

“More Caitlin Clark shade from this woman getting old,” a reaction read.

“Don’t try to make it so obvious Steph,” said another.

😂 Caitlin’s ‘wooow’ after Steph dropped the turnover low. She’s hilarious fr 😂 people in the comments could use the humor she has,” a fan pointed out.

To be fair, Clark has one of the highest usage rates on the team when she’s on the court. Ball-handlers usually average the most turnovers on the squad partly because they’re the ones tasked with most of the playmaking. Clark is also dishing out 8.2 assists per game.

Nevertheless, this has not deterred some naysayers from reading into White’s postgame comments. At this point, it appears that some fans can make something out of almost anything.
