Chicago Bears newcomer is Dennis Allen’s new standard for the rest of the defense

The Chicago Bears had one of the most interesting defenses in the NFL last season. While they did not rank among the best in yards allowed per game, they were the best team in the league in terms of generating turnovers. Indeed, the Bears finished 2025 with the best turnover differential in the NFL and were the leaders in interceptions.

Heading into 2026, though, there are many new faces on Chicago’s defense. Virtually their entire safety room and half of their cornerbacks left in free agency. So many changes to the roster will undoubtedly result in some variations to Dennis Allen‘s scheme. That being said, one of the newcomers has already become one of his favorite players.

Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen praises Coby Bryant

Among the newcomers is Super Bowl-winning safety Coby Bryant. Apparently, he has made quite the impression on Allen already this off-season, and the Bears defensive coordinator wants everyone on his unit to emulate Bryant:

“New safety Coby Bryant has quickly become the standard for the type of player Allen wants in his defense. ‘I love his play style,’ Allen said. ‘I think it epitomizes the way that we want to play the game. He plays fast. He plays violent. He’s smart. He’s instinctive.

“‘He just does a lot of really good things. He was an impressive guy to watch on tape, and I think when you watched him on their defense, I thought his play demeanor was contagious, and that’s kind of what I’m hoping that he brings, and I believe he will bring that type of mindset to our team.’”

Bryant, of course, is projected to be one of Chicago’s new starters at the safety position following the departures of All-Pro Kevin Byard and former Bears draft pick Jaquan Brisker.
