Sophie Cunningham dominated headlines last week for her controversial comments about trans athletes. She received backlash for it; however, others expressed support for her. The veteran guard’s Indiana Fever teammates have mostly remained mum about it, including Caitlin Clark.

Cunningham and the Fever are coming off a 108-100 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday. The matchup marked the first this season between the highest-scoring teams in the league, and it aired nationally. Kelsey Mitchell spearheaded Indiana’s attack with 37 points built on six three-pointers, while Clark supplied 19 points and 10 assists. Meanwhile, Cunningham stayed quiet and limited herself to just three points and two assists.

Olivia Miles and Courtney Williams top-scored for the Lynx with 28 and 27 points, respectively. They achieved their 10th consecutive victory, pushing their league-leading record to 25-6.

Caitlin Clark gives generic answer to Sophie Cunningham controversy

Clark, Mitchell and Indiana head coach Stephanie White addressed reporters after the game. The three-time All-Star guard was asked to share her thoughts on Cunningham’s comments, but she stressed that it’s something she and the team don’t talk about.

“It’s not really a discussion we really have in our locker room,” Clark said. “I think it’s for leagues and the governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions, but our focus is on basketball, and that’s what we talk about and how we can get wins, and obviously we didn’t do that tonight, so you need to find an area to improve in that way.”

The Fever’s five-game winning streak snapped, and their record dropped to 19-11. However, there’s still a long way to go before the regular season ends, and they have a chance to further move up the standings. Clark and Co. will return to action on Thursday when they host the Las Vegas Aces at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. They will then face the Chicago Sky on the road two days later.
