White Sox add outfield depth after losing Everson Pereira and Austin Hays

The Chicago White Sox shook up their outfield ahead of the August 3 trade deadline. Chicago acquired Brenton Doyle, a former Gold Glove Award winner who has struggled offensively, while also parting ways with Everson Pereira and Austin Hays as the club reshaped its roster and made room for their other additions.

After being designated for assignment, Pereira was claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals, while Hays went unclaimed and was subsequently released, making him a free agent. With those departures creating a need for additional organizational depth, Chris Getz wasted little time addressing the outfield.

The White Sox signed former third-round pick Joey Wiemer, giving the organization another experienced outfield option in the minor leagues. The move provides valuable depth in case injuries arise at the major league level while also giving Wiemer an opportunity to get his career back on track.

After a scorching start to the 2026 season with the Washington Nationals, that saw Wiemer reach base in all 10 of his first plate appearances, he eventually settled into a platoon role against left-handed pitching. He continued to produce, posting a solid .286/.398/.512 slash line in the majors.

His results in the minor leagues, however, have been a much different story. Wiemer has struggled to find the same consistency, slashing just .196/.277/.257 this season. The White Sox now have added him to the organization to be called upon in the case of an emergency.
