Bears contract year cornerback earns ringing Ben Johnson endorsement

With injuries to safety Coby Bryant and cornerback Kyler Gordon, the Chicago Bears’ secondary is already reeling before their preseason even begins. Which is why cornerback Tyique Stevenson must step up even further.

Beyond the injuries, Stevenson is entering his contract year. He wants to prove he deserves a long-term place on the Bears. So far in training camp, head coach Ben Johnson isn’t arguing with Stevenson’s wishes, via his Thursday press conference.

“He has had some big time interceptions, which is great to see,” Johnson said. “We’ve talked a lot about the focus level and just staying engaged. He has taken that to heart. When you start to see the ball production show up after that, it’s a great thing.”

“From an offensive perspective you kind of hate it,” Johnson continued, with a smile. “From his side, it’s awesome. It’s good to see that.”

Bears’ Tyrique Stevenson trying to cash in 

Stevenson has had plenty of highs and low throughout his three-year run with the Bear. His antics during the Hail Mary loss to the Washington Commanders may still be fresh in some fan’s minds. But at the at the same time, Stevenson has made seven interceptions with the Bears and has earned his spot entering 2026 for a reason.

Alongside those picks, the cornerback has put up 213 tackles and 38 passes defended. He has at least 10 pass break ups every season of his career. During the 2025 season, Stevenson made 49 tackles, 10 passes defended and an interception. He was dominant against the run, as his 85.4 grade from Pro Football Focus ranked third/114 cornerbacks.

While Stevenson may be a starter entering Week 1, he will till need to earn his spot. Johnson has proven he has no problem making changes on the fly if a player isn’t living up to the standard. Players like Malik Muhammad or Terrell Smith could take over in that scenario.

But for now, Johnson is pleased in what he has been seeing from Stevenson. The cornerback must now prove to be consistent throughout the entire 2026 campaign.
