Why Bears Quarterbacks Face a Different Kind of NFL Pressure

Quarterbacks for any NFL team face vast amounts of scrutiny, and for good reason. They’re paid a king’s ransom to be the difference-maker on the field, and falling short of the sky-high expectations applied to them by fans and pundits alike is almost an act of treason.

Even in this rarified group, there are some teams where the quarterback has a unique intensity of pressure applied to them, and QBs for the Chicago Bears are perhaps the most put-upon of all NFL players. Caleb Williams is only the latest to face the pressure cooker. The extent of the criticism and analysis is thrown into stark contrast when compared with other teams.

The Weight of Bears’ History

The Bears have just a single Super Bowl victory to their name, and even when they triumphed 40 years ago, it was the defensive prowess of the team that  arguably made the biggest contribution. This historic focus also means the Bears haven’t been able to match any of their rivals in key QB metrics, chiefly because it’s the only NFL franchise that has never had a passer reach 4,000 passing yards or throw 30 touchdowns in a single regular season.

In other words, each successive Bears quarterback has a lot to prove, and a historic streak of substandard performance to break. That’s reflected in how bookmakers assess the team each season, with NFL odds in Canada and the US regularly being somewhat pessimistic given the team’s history.

The Burden of Fan Attention Growing Internationally

Football is entrenched into our northern neighbor’s psyche, only trailing hockey on the national stage despite not having a team of their own. The CFL is older than the NFL. Football in Canada developed parallel to the US, and in some cases predates the American version. A game between Harvard and McGill (a prestigious Canadian university in Canada) had the Canadians adapting a more “football-like” approach while their Harvard counterparts played a more “rugby style”. Harvard took note and brought the new style back to the US.

The point is that football is phenomenally popular in Canada, and being near to the border, the Bears have always had Northern support.

Many parts of the US and Canada have multiple sports teams housed in the same city, including Canada. Toronto has the Maple Leafs, the Raptors, the Blue Jays, Toronto FC in MLS, and also teams in the CFL and WNBA, for example. The fact that NFL is so highly rated North of the border should speak volumes of how the NFL has branded itself internationally.

New York City is similarly well served, and this generally means that there’s more of an even distribution of both support and discussion across the multitude of teams.

That goes double for markets with more than one NFL franchise. Despite Chicago’s immense size, they are the only NFL game in town. For those in the Windy City, they’re your team. All of the discussions among local fans and all of the coverage in local media will circle around the Bears. And QBs get the lion’s share of attention in this context as well.

When every throw, completion percentage stat, pre-snap read, and press conference quote is analyzed by one of the largest media markets in the country, it’s reasonable to expect Bears quarterbacks to feel the heat.

The Climate

One thing that Bears quarterbacks and Canadian sports stars share is the challenge of the winter weather being an issue for late-season games. Freezing temperatures and the bad ground conditions they entail make it much harder to be precise during plays, aside from the additional mental burden they create.

The factors that contribute to Bears quarterbacks being subject to a different type of pressure are not insurmountable. However, they need to be considered by anyone looking to assess the team’s prospects going forward, whether they’re a local fan or a neutral party from Canada interested in betting on NFL games.
