For some time now, the Chicago White Sox have held the No. 2 seed in the American League playoff picture. Despite having the league’s fourth-best overall record, Chicago has maintained that position because the three teams ahead of them all come from the American League East. With the White Sox owning the best record in the Central and holding an edge over the teams in the West, they have remained in the No. 2 spot.
While September has only just begun, much of the focus surrounding the White Sox is on whether they can hold off the Cleveland Guardians in the race for the American League Central title. However, another important race is unfolding behind the scenes: the battle for the No. 2 seed, with Chicago and the Houston Astros competing for the spot.
On Thursday, September 3, the two teams will wrap up their regular-season games against one another. While that final game will have an impact on the standings, in which the White Sox currently hold just a 2.5 game lead over the Astros, it is worth noting that Houston’s 2-0 victory Wednesday night carried large significance as it gave the Astros the deciding tiebreaker over Chicago. That could prove crucial if the two teams finish the regular season with identical records.

A few years ago, Major League Baseball eliminated Game 163 as a way to settle ties, instead awarding the tiebreaker to the team with the better head-to-head record during the regular season. Following the White Sox’s loss to the Astros on Wednesday, that advantage officially belongs to Houston. The Astros have won four of the six meetings between the teams this season, with one game still remaining.
Ultimately, the White Sox still control their own path to the No. 2 seed, but the margin for error has become smaller as they have to have an outright better record than Houston and hold off the Guardians in the division. Chicago’s current lead over Houston gives them some breathing room, but if the White Sox want to secure the higher seed, they will need to finish strong and leave no doubt during the final stretch of the regular season.
Importantly, the White Sox currently hold the tiebreaker over the Cleveland Guardians, thanks to a 6-4 advantage in the season series. With three games still remaining between the two teams, Chicago can secure the tiebreaker outright by winning just one of those matchups. The White Sox also won four of six games against the Texas Rangers this season, giving them another potential tiebreaker advantage should Texas work its way back into the No. 2 seed race.
