The Chicago Bears opted against selecting a pass rusher in the 2026 NFL Draft. But if the problem continues to persist, it’ll be a clear need to address in the 2027 draft.
The Bears are already doing their due diligence on available prospects. On Thursday, Chicago scouts are expected to attend Minnesota’s matchup against Eastern Illinois, via Darren Wolfson of KSTP. There, they will see All-Big Ten pass rusher Anthony Smith. The Bears won’t be alone in their scouting efforts, but it’s clear Smith has caught their attention.

Throughout the 2027 campaign, Chicago is sure to be scouting plenty of pass rushers. While the franchise has Montez Sweat, they’ve struggled to find the proper running mate. Adding a top flight option in the draft would give the Bears a true building block for the foreseeable future. If that plan comes to fruition, Smith is a name fans will need to have tucked in their mind for when the 2027 NFL Draft actually rolls around.

Over his four years with Minnesota – encompassing 41 games – Smith has put up 81 tackles, 31 for a loss and 19.5 sacks. He broke onto the scene in 2025 with a career-high 17.5 TFLs and a Big Ten-leading 12.5 sacks. It’s not surprising seeing him earn First-team All-Big Ten honors for his efforts.
Coming back for one more year with the Gophers, Smith’s goal is clear. Prove his overall pass rush prowess and remain a consistent force in opposing team’s backfields. If he does, Smith will only see his name shoot up draft boards.
The Bears now want to see his game in person. Smith has an opportunity to show he can be a leader off the edge. If Chicago likes what they see, it wouldn’t be a shock to hear the pass rusher’s name called come 2027 draft time.
