Cubs’ 2025 postseason star showing signs of a September revival

Last postseason, Chicago Cubs first baseman Michael Busch made history by becoming the first player to hit two leadoff home runs in the same playoff series. He went deep in Games 1 and 3 against the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Division Series, finishing the postseason with four home runs overall as he homered once more against the Brewers had another long ball previously in the Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres.

At the time, that standout postseason performance perfectly encapsulated Busch’s 2025 season. The left-handed slugger belted 34 home runs, 25 doubles and 90 RBI while posting an impressive .866 OPS. Between that breakout regular season and his postseason heroics, expectations were understandably high heading into 2026.

Unfortunately for Busch, he hasn’t quite lived up to those expectations, particularly when it comes to power and run production. Through September 13, he has 19 home runs, 27 doubles and 76 RBI while posting a .742 OPS. His batting average has also dipped to .239 after hitting .261 a year ago. However, Busch has made up for some of that offensive decline by showing improved plate discipline, drawing 82 walks this season compared to just 56 in 2025.

That said, Busch has gotten off to a strong start in September, and rediscovering his power stroke at this point in the season could provide a major boost for the Cubs as they continue their push for the top Wild Card spot.

Aside from May, when Busch posted a .300/.446/.510 slash line with four home runs, seven doubles and 24 RBI, he has struggled to produce a slugging percentage above .400 and match the offensive impact he provided a year ago. However, that narrative is beginning to change in September.

As of September 14, Busch owns a .463 slugging percentage through 12 games, with five extra-base hits and eight RBI. From September 8-12, he recorded at least one RBI in four consecutive games, including a three-RBI performance Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Already nearly matching his August RBI total of 10, Busch is on pace to put together his best month in quite some time.

A resurgence like that would be a welcome sight for the Cubs as the games carry more weight down the stretch. Furthermore, Busch has already shown that he can be a difference-maker when the lights are brightest, making a return to peak form especially valuable for the Cubs as they head toward the postseason.
