Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman accomplish feat not seen since 1958

The Chicago Cubs continued their offensive success on Wednesday with an 8-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves. In the process, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman further etched their name into the history books.

With a six-run lead by the fifth inning, Chicago was able to cruise to victory despite a late Atlanta rally. Both Crow-Armstrong and Bregman hit an homerun to help the Cubs’ cause. The longball wasn’t the only way both players contributed Wednesday.

Crow-Armstrong hit another home run for good measure, adding a triple and driving in thee runs overall. Bregman accounted for four of Chicago’s runs, finishing a single away from the cycle. Both players were the catalyst for the Cubs and outscored the Braves on their own.

As they chase a deep playoff run, the franchise will be relying on Crow-Armstrong and Bregman. But it seems unlikely they’ll be able to match the same feat they hit on Wednesday.

Each player had at least three extra base hits, including a home run and triple. The MLB hasn’t seen that from a pair of teammates since 1958, via OpstaStats, h/t Ryan Young of Yahoo Sports.

“Crow-Armstrong and Bregman each hit a home run, each hit a triple and each had three extra-base hits in the 8-4 rout at Wrigley Field,” Young wrote. “That made them the first pair of MLB teammates to do that in the same game in nearly 70 years.”

“The last pair of teammates to pull off the feat was Willie Mays and Daryl Spencer for the San Francisco Giants in 1958, according to OptaStats,” he concluded.”

The Cubs have scored 817 runs on the season, 29 more than any other team in the league. They’ll be rallying behind that offense for as long as they can. At the forefront of that surge will remain two potent bats in Crow-Armstrong and Bregman.
