Chicago Bears rookie earns 1-word mic drop after NFL debut

The Chicago Bears entered 2026 with injuries across their secondary. Matters were made even worse when Xavier Woods, who is replacing the injured Coby Bryant, was ruled out in Week 1. The Bears were forced to turn to a fourth-round rookie for extra help.

Malik Muhammad didn’t flinch when his name was called. Being thrown into the fire, the cornerback responded by putting up two passes defended and an interception. He has poised to earn more opportunities in Chicago’s secondary moving forward.

Where Muhammad plays full-time is yet to be seen. He spent his entire college career on the outside. But with Kyler Gordon’s mysterious injury, the Bears need him in the slot as well. Perhaps they use him in a versatile role.

Whatever the position may be the be, Chicago at the very least wants Muhammad on the gridiron after his Week 1 performance.

Chicago Bears impressed with Malik Muhammad

Defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator Al Harris has helped mold Muhammad since his arrival to the Bears. In terms of what impresses him most about the coordinator, Harris had one word come to mind, via CHGO.

“Everything,” Harris said.

“He takes the coaching points,” he continued. “When you see guys make splash plays, then you go back to the drills and you see that, it’s huge.”

Harris wasn’t done with his effusive praise of the rookie. He wouldn’t answer questions about whether Muhammad would start outside. But there’s no doubting how the coach feels about the cornerback, via CHGO.

“Malik is doing a great job. He’s been doing a great job since he’s been here. He’s still a rookie, still got things to learn. He’s going to have his growing pains just like everybody else. Right now today, he is playing nickel for us.”

The Bears let up 353 yards and three touchdowns in Week 1 to the Carolina Panthers. Fixing their secondary will be a pivotal prerogative for the Bears. If things pan out how their hoping, Muhammad would play a significant role in those plans sooner rather than later.
