Chicago Bears make left tackle change amid struggles vs. Minnesota Vikings

The Chicago Bears knew facing off against the Minnesota Vikings’ defense would be a difficult test. Early on in Week 2, the franchise was forced to make a change across their offense line due to their inability to move the ball forward.

Left tackle Braxton Jones was benched heading into Chicago’s third offensive drive. In his place, Theo Benedet took over on Caleb Williams’ blindside, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.

“Theo Benedet is now in at left tackle on the Bears’ third drive,” Cronin wrote. “Doesn’t look to be injury related for Braxton Jones, who is standing on the sideline. Jones was flagged for holding earlier.”

Jones was called for a crucial holding penalty as the Bears were working towards Vikings territory. Penalties have hurt Chicago overall, losing 20 yards on three flags. Head coach Ben Johnson has preached about limiting the penalties. He has now proven he isn’t afraid to make changes if those expectations aren’t met.

This isn’t the first time Jones has been benched. Former second-rounder Ozzy Trapilo earned his first starts at the NFL level due to Jones’ absence. Now, there’s a chance he can take over for him again. While the left tackle was inactive for Week 2, he did return for a full practice on Friday. Once fully cleared, the Bears will likely look to place him in the starting lineup again.

What that means for Jones’ long-term outlook is yet to be seen. But barring an unknown injury, getting benched so early into the season isn’t a good sign.

For now, the Bears are solely focused on winning a Divisional matchup against the Vikings. They’ll be looking for Benedet to offer more consistent play at left tackle.
