When the Chicago Bears took the field on Sunday afternoon, they were fresh off an impressive Week 1 victory.
However, after a tough 9-3 loss in Week 2, things will look quite different during this week of practice. The Bears were sloppy on offense and couldn’t get the run game going. Even though the weather may have played a factor, it wasn’t a good showing.
In the midst of the loss, the Bears also watched their franchise QB Caleb Williams get carted off the field with a hamstring injury. Fortunately, the injury looked worse than it actually was. Williams will likely be out for a few weeks, if he indeed misses any time.
Today, Ben Johnson spoke to the media about Williams’ status. He didn’t rule him out entirely for their Week 3 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, but did say it was unlikely he would practice this week.
Johnson also used this as a chance to uplift his potential Week 3 starter, backup QB Tyson Bagent.

Great command getting down the field. Coming in these conditions weather and game against this defense excellent work.

Bagent replaced Williams at the end of yesterday’s loss. He was sacked on the final play of the game, and just a play before, he was nearly intercepted. It was a tall task for Bagent facing a very difficult Vikings defense in the fourth quarter of a close game.
However, he moved the ball down the field and looked quite confident. Bagent has made a name for himself over the past few seasons as a solid backup, and has even been mentioned in trade talks.
It’s clear that Johnson still believes in Bagent going forward if he indeed gets the call.
“I feel strongly about what he’s capable of, and our team does too. They know he’s a darn good football player.”
Bagent signed a two-year, 10-million-dollar contract extension with the Chicago Bears in 2025, keeping him with the team through the 2027 season. He’s been a solid backup ever since he joined the Bears in 2023 as an UDFA.

If the Bears do turn to Bagent, they’ll be in good hands.
Bagent has appeared in 12 regular-season games (four starts), going 2-2 as a starter. He’s also a threat as a runner, as he has 30 carries for 139 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns over his career.
He won the hearts of Bears fans in 2023 when he made his first career NFL start. He led Chicago to a 30-12 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, throwing for 162 yards and a touchdown.
All of his previous starts have been in replacement of former QB Justin Fields, so it’s been a while since he’s had meaningful snaps. That also speaks to Caleb Williams’ durability, as he’s in line to miss a start for the first time in his NFL career.
Although he has experience, Bagent could be facing a tough Eagles team in Week 3. They’re off to a 2-0 start and have looked every bit as advertised over the first two games. Hopefully, this Bears defense can help ease the pressure and build off a promising Week 2 outing.
