Entering Week 3, the Chicago Bears sit at 1-1 and are set to host the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.
This comes off a tough loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, as both offenses failed to score a touchdown. A rarity in this league, as the final score was 9-3. On the positive side, Chicago’s defense looked a whole lot better compared to how it opened up last week.
However, many issues plagued the Bears yesterday; a massive one was how special teams operated.
With roughly 6 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Bears lined up for a 23-yard field goal to tie the game. What is usually a chip shot for Cairo Santos was blocked due to the poor blocking of rookie tight end Sam Roush. He let CB Isaiah Rodgers come screaming off the edge to get the block, shifting the momentum to the Vikings.

The snap was high as well, and that’s another issue in itself, as the Bears may need to look for a replacement at long snapper. Rookie Beau Gardner won the job in camp as an UDFA.
Today, Ben Johnson addressed the media and spoke about the mistake. He wasn’t happy and said they’ll be working to correct it this week in practice.
“The operation was not clean. A high snap didn’t help. That first field goal was a warning shot as far as I’m concerned. No. 2 was right off the edge. If he didn’t touch it, then he was darn close to touching it then.” Johnson continued, “Something we addressed on the sideline and we weren’t able to get corrected the second time, so certainly in a race to get that right.”
The first field goal Johnson was alluding to was a 50-yard make from Santos. These were the only points the Bears scored all day. The snap was high there as well, but luckily, holder Tory Taylor made the adjustment and the kick was made.

A lot of things went wrong during the Bears’ Week 2 loss, but the most concerning was the Caleb Williams injury.
Luckily, it seems Williams has dodged a bullet and will likely only miss a few games, if any. The third-year quarterback faced criticism today on social media following his theatric exit in the fourth quarter.
As mentioned before, not all things went wrong for the Bears. Defensively, they made things tough on Vikings QB Carson Wentz and limited Minnesota’s weapons. When your defense allows zero touchdowns, the hope is that you win the football game. It’s a sign of progress for a group that had plenty of its own questions following Week 1.
However, on special teams, it’ll be interesting to see how the coaching staff cleans this up.
In addition to dropping a key pass from Williams, rookie tight end Sam Roush missed completley missed his block on the 4th quarter field goal attempt. Roush said, “As a wing, you have your inside gap and with your outside hand, you’re punching out on (Rodgers), the widest rusher or the first rusher outside of you,” Roush said. “I felt like I got a piece of him. Clearly I didn’t get enough because he got there in time.”
Coach Ben Johnson has his work cut out for him this week.
