Bears lineman earns peculiar Ben Johnson message after Week 2 move

The Chicago Bears are hoping to have their left tackle situation figured out sooner rather than later. But the franchise saw two players man the position in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

To the franchise’s credit, that was by design. The Bears wanted to give starter Braxton Jones a breather and reserve him for later in the game. Theo Benedet came in in his absence.

Jones wasn’t benched in the traditional sense. In fact, head coach Ben Johnson has been pleased with his play. Still, and especially with Ozzy Trapilo coming back soon, Jones must prove he can handle the left tackle spot full time to retain his role.

Johnson made it clear there was nothing fishy about Jones heading to the sideline against the Vikings. That endorsement could play pivotal with Trapilo breathing down his neck.

Bears’ Ben Johnson backs Braxton Jones

Jones has had plenty of highlights over his five years with the Bears. But injuries have taken a massive bite out of his career, leading to some red flags. In 2026 though, Jones is healthy. And early on, he has caught his head coach’s attention, via Johnson’s Wednesday press conference.

“Braxton has been pretty good,” Johnson continued. “I think he’s done a nice job. We talked about platooning him a little bit there with Theo just to keep him fresh late in games. He strains, he finishes. His understanding of the run game has served him well. I think he’s done a nice job for two weeks in.”

Whenever he is on the gridiron, Jones must stay consistent. Strong offensive line play has become a key piece of Chicago’s success. They cannot afford to have any gaps alongside their foundation.

So far though, Jones has passed all the tests. If he continues on this trajectory, it’ll be harder for Johnson to take him off the field.
