Bears’ Ben Johnson leaves door open for Tyson Bagent Week 4 start

Quarterback Case Keenum is the talk of the Windy City after leading the Chicago Bears to 27-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he isn’t guaranteed to start in Week 4 against the New York Jets.

Ultimately, when Caleb Williams is healthy, he will be under center again. But in the meantime, either Keenum or Tyson Bagent will operate in the starting role.

Bagent would’ve been in line to start in Week 3 under normal circumstances. But a concussion eliminated most of his practice week. Bagent ultimately cleared the concussion protocol. But the Bears deemed Keenum was in a better place to start.

Bagent will now be able to practice with the starters again. That’ll force head coach Ben Johnson to make a difficult decision in Week 4.

The fact Keenum completed 24-of-34 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns will certainly help his cause. But Johnson and company have numerous different evaluating points. One of them being Bagent’s place on the depth chart, via Brendan Sugrue of Bears Wire.

“We’ll have a discussion as a coaching staff and we’ll see where we need to go from here but I said it last week and I’ll say it again: There was a reason why Tyson ended training camp as our No. 2 quarterback,” Johnson said.

Conventional wisdom points to your QB2 being under center over your QB3 should QB1 go down. Because of that, Bagent would be in line to start. But now Keenum has thrown a wrench in those plans. His performance on Monday Night Football may have earned him another opportunity to start.

Now fully healthy, Bagent will look to take back his starting role for the time being. Chicago may have momentum entering Week 4 after their latest victory. But the franchise now again has a tricky quarterback decision to decipher.
