Worrying injury vs. Eagles forces Chicago Bears defensive change

The Chicago Bears are basking in the glow of their 27-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. However, not everything was positive coming out of Monday Night Football.
Defensive back Cam Lewis was forced to leave the game with a hip injury. He went back to the locker room with his helmet off, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
In his absence, the Bears used a potentially telling defensive alignment. Tyrique Stevenson entered the game while Malik Muhammad moved inside, via Mason Williams of the Times of Northwest Indiana.
“Tyrique Stevenson is now playing outside corner for the Bears, moving Malik Muhammad inside to nickel,” Williams wrote.
Muhammad took Stevenson’s starting spot entering the game with Lewis operating as the nickel back. Stevenson had been dealing with a hamstring leading up to the game. Furthermore, Muhammad has impressed early in his rookie season.
Still, if pressed into a lack of depth situation, the Bears’ preferences are clear. Stevenson has spent his entire career outside and will remain there, while Muhammad is capable of operating inside and out. That doesn’t mean it is a set and stone plan. But the fact Muhammad started outside and was moved after injury shows Chicago wasn’t comfortable making a one-for-one swap between Stevenson and Lewis.
The Bears will now be paying close attention to Lewis and his injury leading into Week 4. If he can’t play, Chicago may already have an idea on how they’ll operate. Still, the mounting injuries will only make things more difficult.
