League of Legends Ranked 5s re-release date confirmed, and it comes with some new systems too

Riot Games has announced that Ranked 5s is making a comeback, with a few twists since the mode was last taken offline. The new mode will feature more flexible teams, set queue times, and some other system changes too.

When will LoL Ranked 5s go live?

Ranked 5s queue mode will return as a temporary mode from June 26th to September 6th. It comes slightly later into Season 2.

The ranked queue will essentially be available on weekends only, between the hours of 9PM and 1AM local time for each server region. EUW is based on CEST, so British, Portuguese, and some Middle Eastern and African players may want to double-check their time zones and ping too. North American players will also need to check their time zone relative to the NA data centre.

Make sure to check out the mode and give it a try. Riot is also offering a unique icon for all players, alongside a unique banner for your peak rank for Gold and above.

How LoL’s Ranked 5s mode will work

If you are not an old-school LoL player, you might not know what Ranked 5s was. Ranked 5s was previously its own queue ladder, with players creating teams and pushing as a coherent five-stack. It was taken offline roughly ten years ago as Riot began working on Flex queues, alongside Clash events, to replace it.

Now on its return, players will be able to play again, albeit at specific times and with some team flexibility. You should be able to queue for the mode with any five players, which should create some flexibility with team MMR when queuing. It also means any player, regardless of individual MMR, can play together, with the new systems apparently factoring in skill disparity. How that works in practice remains to be seen, as you can get similar issues with skill depth in Ranked Flex, for example.

The game mode will also use a more tournament-style drafting format, just like the pros. It means each team gets three bans, followed by a few picks, then the other two bans before picking from the rest of the roster.

The other important note is that the new Ranked 5s mode can only be queued at specific times. Riot does not want the player base fracturing into other ranked systems, so restricting the hours it can be played, combined with needing a pre-made five-stack, means more players can queue more optimally without getting stuck in queue for a long time. That was a problem previously, with end-of-season Challenger grinds seeing teams stuck in queues for hours at a time, if memory serves correctly.

The joys of cheesing Challenger borders back in the day.
