The incident between Caitlin Clark and Alyssa Thomas has been the biggest talking point in the WNBA world over the past week.

On Wednesday, the Indiana Fever suffered a 111-109 defeat against the Phoenix Mercury. However, what overshadowed the game’s outcome was an incident in the second quarter that ultimately led to a one-game suspension for Thomas.

This was after the Mercury star drove her fist into Clark’s throat as the latter fell to the ground. The referees did not call a foul during the play, but the WNBA decided to review the incident postgame. The league issued Thomas a Flagrant 2 foul for a non-basketball play, along with a suspension.

Thomas served her punishment on Saturday, sitting out Phoenix’s 89-80 win over the Toronto Tempo.

WNBPA refuses to comment on Caitlin Clark-Alyssa Thomas incident

While fans and analysts alike have had a lot to say about the issue, the WNBPA has remained silent. In fact, reporter Christine Brennan reached out to the Players’ Association to ask them about the controversy. The WNBPA declined to comment.

“Is it punishable to put your fist in another player’s throat, or is it not?” Brennan asked WNBPA executive director Terri Jackson.

“The WNBPA respectfully declines comment,” responded a WNBPA spokesperson.

The Players’ Union is usually vocal on issues involving players, but for one reason or another, the association has decided to sit this particular saga out.

As for Clark, she is currently nursing a back injury sustained in the loss to Phoenix. The two-time WNBA All-Star was fouled on a three-point attempt, causing her to hit the ground hard. She was later ruled out of the game and ended up missing Saturday’s 111-87 win over the Los Angeles Sparks.

It remains to be seen if Clark will be available when the Fever return to action on Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces.
