Subnautica 2: How to quickly expand your tiny starting inventory at the start

Share your love

Subnautica 2 does not take long to remind you that pockets are apparently not a priority in futuristic underwater survival gear. You start with a pretty limited inventory, and once you begin scooping up resources, tools, and whatever else the ocean decides to throw at you, that space disappears fast.

Thankfully, you can expand your inventory very early in Subnautica 2, and the first upgrade is only a few lengths of breaststroke from your starting lifepod. The key is finding and using biobeds, which give you extra inventory slots when interacted with.

How to expand your inventory in Subnautica 2

To get your first inventory upgrade, you need to follow the early story objectives until Chap’s signal becomes available.

Step 1: Complete Anita’s signal objective

When you first begin, follow the objective marker tied to Anita’s signal. This must be completed before the game sends you toward Chap’s last known location.

Step 2: Go to Chap’s lifepod

Once Anita’s objective is done, you will receive another signal pointing you toward Chap’s lifepod. It is roughly 250 metres from your starting lifepod, so it is close enough to reach almost immediately. You will need to dive down into the cave, so make sure your tanks are full, and if possible, have one or two air bladders with you as a just-in-case.

When in the cave, you will see a big red hatch, which, for quite some time, I assume red meant it was locked. I mean, it looks locked, doesn’t it? Half an hour later, and feeling a bit sheepish, I realised you can just swim into it with nothing required. That will teach me.

Step 3: Find the biobed

Inside Chap’s lifepod, look for the biobed. It is the large pod-shaped device in the centre of the lifepod.

Before using it, scan the biobed so it is added to your databank. Once scanned, interact with it and your inventory will immediately expand by three slots.

Are there more inventory upgrades?

Yes. Chap’s lifepod contains the first biobed, but it is not the only one in Subnautica 2. As you explore, keep checking lifepods and other points of interest for more biobeds, as each one you interact with can increase your inventory further.

It is worth doing this as soon as possible rather than waiting until you are constantly juggling materials. Subnautica has always been a game about lovingly collecting 900 bits of ocean rubbish and then immediately regretting not having more storage, so every extra slot helps.
