Chicago White Sox: Colson Montgomery makes MLB history in 5-1 win over Yankees

For a long time, it did not seem like the Chicago White Sox would have anything to feel good about in the near future. Three straight seasons of 100+ losses, which included a Major League record 121 losses in 2024, had fans feeling as bad about the organization as at any point in franchise history.

Coming into 2026, there were not high expectations. Fans just wanted to see some semblance of improvement. The fact that Chicago is now 39-34 is better than anyone could have expected. That they are in first place in the American League Central Division is just an added bonus.

And through it all, Colson Montgomery has continued to be a bright spot.

Chicago came into New York on a high note after beating the two best teams in the National League. However, they dropped the first two games against the Yankees, and fans began to wonder if the White Sox could really hang with the powerhouses of the American League.

On Thursday, though, Chicago mashed two homers on their way to a 5-1 victory. The first of these came from Montgomery, his 20th on the season. That bomb also put him in the Major League record books:

2nd season: 20th HR in 254th AB

Montgomery is the first player in MLB history to hit 20 home runs in less than 275 at-bats in each of his first two seasons. What was astounding about his feat last year was that he was not called up until mid-way through the year. Similarly, he has accomplished the feat before the halfway point of the current season.

Early on this year, a lot of the attention went to Munetaka Murakami, and rightfully so. After all, he had 20 home runs already through the first 60 games of the season.

But Montgomery is showing everyone that he is just as big of a star as his slugging counterpart.
