Chicago Bears could find critical CB help in unexpected place

The Chicago Bears are widely viewed as Super Bowl contenders heading into 2026, but one would be remiss to dismiss all of the issues this team has.

We know that the Bears ignored their pass rush this offseason, but they also have serious question marks at wide receiver. Not only that, but Chicago’s cornerback room could potentially be a complete mess going into the new campaign.

The Bears are returning Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson as their two starters, and they drafted Malik Muhammad to put some pressure on the latter. Beyond those three, however, Chicago is painfully thin at the position, and we know about Johnson’s injury history.

There is no question that the Bears could stand to add another cornerback before training camp, but the problem is that there really aren’t many clear-cut answers available.

But there is one player who could potentially represent a terrific pickup for Chicago: Trevon Diggs.

Diggs was once one of the best cornerbacks in football during his early days with the Dallas Cowboys, making back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2021 and 2022 while also earning a First-Team All-Pro selection during the latter campaign.

Injuries have derailed him ever since, as Diggs has played in a grand total of 22 games the past three seasons. That led to the Cowboys releasing him in late 2025. He then signed with the Green Bay Packers to finish out the season. In nine contests, he logged 27 tackles while posting a solid 65.9 coverage grade at Pro Football Focus.

Is Diggs the same player from several years ago? No, but he is still just 27 years old and should have a place on an NFL roster based on how well he played in limited action last season. And if there is any team that needs to take a chance on Diggs, it’s the Bears.

Not only does Johnson have a very checkered medical history (yes, I understand that Diggs does, as well), but Stevenson was benched multiple times in 2025 and could be on the verge of losing his job. There is no way Chicago feels comfortable with Stevenson at this moment, so why not bring in Diggs for some competition?

Diggs could surely be had on a cheap one-year prove-it contract, so it’s not like it would cost the Bears much.
