Fever coach Stephanie White thanked refs after heated scuffle vs. Mercury

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White was happy to see her team secure a much-needed victory on Monday night. The Fever were coming off back-to-back losses to Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream, but they bounced back with an 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday.

White played a key role in keeping her players composed throughout a heated matchup. The veteran coach did all she could to ensure her players kept their heads in the game amid the extracurricular activity throughout the contest.

After the win, White made sure to shout out the referees for also keeping the game in check.

The most contentious incident in the game happened in the fourth quarter. Caitlin Clark got tangled up with Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner, which led to the two exchanging words on the court. Players from both teams got involved, resulting in a heated scuffle between the two sides.

White issued a reminder to Clark after the win. The Fever coach said she needs her superstar guard to be more aware, especially after Clark received her fifth technical foul of the season. The two-time All-Star is now just three techs away from an automatic one-game suspension.

White also gave the referees their flowers for how they kept control of the game after the Clark incident.

“I was talking to the officials about it when the other stuff happened, so I didn’t really see exactly what was happening at the time,” White said during her postgame press conference. “But look, it’s a competitive sport. That stuff happens.

“I felt like the officials did a good job after everything of getting it under control. I appreciate the way they called it after that, certainly.

The former WNBA Coach of the Year then turned her attention to her players, reminding them to keep their emotions in check.

“But as a group we have to be able to have our moment and then regroup and play with poise and composure,” she said. “It can’t continue to go on.”
