WNBA: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever suffered a tough loss on Wednesday night against the Phoenix Mercury, 111-109.

The Mercury got their revenge after Monday’s 86-77 loss to the Fever. That matchup was not short of controversy, with Cunningham getting into it with Phoenix forward DeWanna Bonner during the game.

The intensity carried over to Wednesday’s matchup. Caitlin Clark was in the middle of it all as the two-time WNBA All-Star battled through the Mercury’s physicality throughout the contest. So much so that Clark was ruled out of the game due to a back injury. The 24-year-old tweaked her back in the second quarter after being fouled on a three-point attempt.

That wasn’t the only contentious moment in Wednesday’s game. Mercury star Alyssa Thomas seemingly drove her first into Clark’s throat at one point in the chippy affair. No foul was called, but Thomas is now facing intense backlash from fans for supposedly attempting to hurt Clark.

Cunningham was quiet in Wednesday’s loss. The 6-foot-1 guard finished with five points and one three-pointer in 20 minutes off the bench.

The Fever veteran took to social media to post a video of herself after the game. She admitted that she was still feeling unsettled after the testy encounter against the Mercury.

“a lil something to take the edge off,” Cunningham captioned her post.

In the video, the former Missouri Tigers star blows off some steam by having a tasty postgame snack.

“I feel like if I were a smoker, tonight would be a night where I’d smoke a whole pack,” Cunningham said. “But I’m not, so I’m gonna eat a couple of cinnamon rolls. Hot damn.”

Cunningham and Co. will need to move on quickly from this loss. They get two days off before their next game, a home matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday.
