Chicago White Sox urged to trade for 8x All-Star ahead of MLB deadline

The Chicago White Sox are 47-42 on the season and sit atop the American League Central Division. This is a development that, truly, no one saw coming prior to the 2026 season. After losing 100+ games in three consecutive years, many believed the White Sox would have another poor showing.

However, the team’s young core of prospects that now have found themselves in the Majors have made Chicago one of the most entertaining teams in baseball, and one of the best teams in the American League.

That being said, they still have fixes to make, namely in the bullpen, if they are going maintain this surprising division lead.

There are of course, many teams that are going to be looking to add some high-quality bullpen depth at the MLB trade deadline. Additionally, there is no shortage of such arms that will be made available.

Among these is Aroldis Chapman of the Boston Red Sox, whom The Athletic claims should be the top target of the White Sox as the deadline draws near:

“I think they should target both Aroldis Chapman and Sonny Gray of the Red Sox, but should be willing to consider all possibilities, including an in-division trade with the Royals. The White Sox trading a bat for either Michael Wacha or Seth Lugo could make sense for both teams.

Best fit: Aroldis Chapman, LHP, Boston Red Sox

“Chapman would become their lockdown closer and give them a much better shot at reaching the postseason and being competitive once there.”

An eight-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, Chapman has been one of the few bright spots on what has turned out to be a disappointing Red Sox team. He is currently 0-3 with a 2.36 ERA and 18 saves so far in 2026.

Chapman will be a free agent at the end of the year, which means that he would only be a rental in Chicago if they were to acquire him. Three months of the Hall of Fame-caliber closer may not be worth the prospects they would need to give up to get him.
