The Indiana Fever won against the Phoenix Mercury 92-89 on Thursday despite Caitlin Clark missing the game. The team decided to rest its star guard in the second game of a back-to-back set due to a lingering back issue.

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana’s charge with 29 points on 10-of-22 shooting. She also recorded two rebounds and eight assists, along with 6-for-6 free-throw shooting. Aliyah Boston supported her with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Tyasha Harris and Lexie Hull contributed 15 and 10 points, respectively.

The Fever achieved their fourth win in their last six games, pushing their record to 13-9 for the season. They will next face the Las Vegas Aces to close out their current four-game road trip.

While Mitchell and Boston top scored for Indiana, Makayla Timpson stole the show. Mercury guard Kahleah Copper drove hard to the basket in the fourth quarter and attempted a left-handed layup. However, the Fever center leaped to the air and stuffed Copper’s attempt on the backboard.

Clark shared the clip on her Instagram story and added her two-word reaction to the jaw-dropping play.

“My goodness,” Clark wrote.

Timpson played 15 minutes but failed to score, finishing with five rebounds, one assist and an emphatic block. She averages only 3.3 points and 3.5 rebounds this season, but she impacts games more than the stat sheets show. The 23-year-old’s tenacity and hustle drive Indiana’s success.

Meanwhile, Clark is expected to return to action on Sunday. She showed no signs of being hampered by back issue that forced her to miss the previous two games. The Fever are likely taking a cautious approach to managing the three-time All-Star’s condition to preserve her for the playoffs.

Indiana currently stands seventh in the standings but has a chance to climb if it can string together more wins.
