The Chicago Cubs are 59-46 on the season as they begin a crucial rivalry series against the St. Louis Cardinals. As they sit seven games out of first place in the National League Central Division, Chicago has some ground to make up. However, since they also have a comfortable Wild Card lead, there is some comfort in the fact that they are likely to make the postseason.

But whether or not they are able to make a deep run in the playoffs will depend on their starting pitching. Unfortunately, they have seen their pitching staff decimated by injuries all season long. And while they have been open to giving players several chances to contribute, they are not willing to put up with continued inconsistency.

One of Chicago’s most inconsistent pitchers this year has been right-hander Jameson Taillon. After his last start saw him give up seven earned runs in four innings, Craig Counsell would not commit to him making his next one.

Now, Taillon has been designated for assignment:

As he is scheduled to make $8 million for the rest of the year, it is not likely that any other teams will want to trade for him. Taillon will likely clear waivers. At that point, the Cubs will either send him to Triple-A Iowa or release him.

In 15 starts this season, Taillon is 2-6 with a 5.92 ERA. He also leads the National League with 25 home runs given up.

“I’ve been around long enough to know that I’m hurting the team and have been for a little while now,” Taillon said after his last start. “So I’m not naive to that at all.”
