The Chicago Bears have started training camp as they prepare for the 2026 NFL season. This year they find themselves in a very different position than in years past. Previous seasons have seen them hoping to improve upon losing records as they rave about bright new talent that was added to the roster.

And while there have been multiple talented young players added to Chicago’s roster as well this season, the Bears are coming off of a 2025 season that saw them finish first in the NFC North and knock the Green Bay Packers out of the NFL Playoffs.

Caleb Williams, entering his third year in the league, has a great deal of expectations placed upon him this year as he has garnered more national recognition. And he wanted to make sure he was in the best shape possible.

According to Courtney Cronin, who covers the Bears for ESPN, Williams told the media that he dropped 10-15 pounds this off-season:

“‘I’m excited about that to be able to move a little bit better, be smoother,’ Williams said.

“His physical attributes are part of what Williams believes will help him take the next step in his second season in Ben Johnson’s offense. His mental aptitude to grasp more of the playbook and take on more responsibility is another factor in his projected growth.”

Last season, Williams played at 226 pounds. This weight loss will put him in the 211-216 pound range.

Being more mobile will certainly be beneficial to the young Bears quarterback. While he was only stacked 24 times in 2025 (down from 68 in 2024), he avoided sacks primarily by throwing the ball away. These throwaways played a role in his abysmal 58.1% completion percentage. This is something both Williams and Ben Johnson have said is something that must improve in 2026.

Hopefully being a bit lighter on his feet will allow Williams to extend plays even more going forward.
