Chicago Cubs ranked a top-3 landing spot for All-Star closer Mason Miller

The Chicago Cubs are, as of this writing, 61-46 on the season, which is one of the best records in Major League Baseball, let alone the National League. However, they still currently sit 5.5 games out of first place in the NL Central Division.

That being said, the fact that they are right in the thick of the playoff picture is nothing short of astounding. While they have had two separate 10-game winning streaks this year, they also have had a 10-game losing streak. Additionally, they went an entire month without winning a single series.

There were many reasons for their struggles, not the least of which was the plethora of injuries suffered by their pitching staff.

The Chicago Cubs could acquire Mason Miller at the MLB trade deadline

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, one of the most high-profile names in rumors is that of two-time All-Star closer Mason Miller. However, there is no certainty that the San Diego Padres will even be willing to move their closer right now.

That being said, in the event that they do make Miller available, Fox Sports has named the Cubs as one of the top-three destinations for him:

“Chicago’s bullpen is tied for 22nd in opponent batting average (.247), tied for 14th in WHIP (1.31) and 14th outright in ERA (3.97). Moreover, they’ve collectively blown 17 saves, Jacob Webb leads their staff with just five saves and the Cubs have had 12 different pitchers record a save.

“Plug Miller in the closer role for the Cubs, and the likes of Webb, Daniel Palencia and Trent Thornton, who are all having successful 2026 campaigns, serve as the bridge to the ninth inning.”

Miller is currently 27 for 27 in save opportunities and has a sparkling 0.81 ERA. Clearly, adding him to the bullpen would suddenly make the Cubs relievers among the best in baseball.

The problem, though, is that Miller has three more years of club control after 2026. While this makes him an even more ideal trade target for Chicago, it also makes him more expensive. The Cubs would have to give up a haul of their top prospects in order to get him.

But given the fact that Chicago is just a few strong arms away from competing for World Series, it might be worth it.
