The Chicago Cubs need pitching. That, of course, was apparent even before the season began. Unfortunately, the injury bug has not spared Chicago for any stretch of time, and they have consistently had to put key arms, both starters and relievers, on the injured list.

As obvious as it was that they need to improve their depth, it was just as clear that Jameson Taillon was not going to provide them with valuable consistent performances.

Now, he is headed to the American League.

Last week, it was decided that Taillon would be designated for assignment by the organization. On Sunday, it was reported that they traded him:

Taillon was 2-6 with a 5.92 ERA in 15 starts for Chicago this season. In four years with the Cubs, he was 33-31 with a 4.21 ERA. His best season was 2024 when he was 12-8 with a 3.27 ERA in 28 starts.

In return for the struggling right-hander, Chicago receives cash and a player to be named later from the Blue Jays.

Based on the decision to designate him for assignment, it was clear that Taillon was not in Chicago’s plans going forward. He was given plenty of opportunities, but was unable to take advantage of them.

A free agent at the end of season, Taillon will try to salvage his value on the market by contributing to the Blue Jays as they try to get back into an American League wild card spot. They are currently 3.5 games back of the final Wild Card position.
