Chicago Cubs trade proposal lands them 2 pitchers from Toronto Blue Jays

It could be said the fact that the Chicago Cubs are looking for pitching depth ahead of the MLB trade deadline is the worst kept secret in baseball. The reason it is not called that is because it really is no secret. All season long, the Cubs have struggled with injuries to both their starting rotation and bullpen.

The good news, though, is that they are 62-48 and hold the top Wild Card spot in the National League. While they trail the lead in the NL Central by 6.5 games, the fact that they are in the thick of the playoff picture despite their plethora of pitching injuries is a testament to how good this team can be.

All they need is to get some reinforcements at the deadline.

Proposed trade would land the Chicago Cubs Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays

Over the course of the last several months, the Cubs have been linked to numerous pitchers that are expected to be moved ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Bleacher Report recently suggested a trade that would bring Toronto Blue Jays pitchers Kevin Gausman and Jeff Hoffman to Chicago:

“The Blue Jays surprise seller turn should make Kevin Gausman one of the most sought-after rental arms on the market, and while his 4.51 ERA this year doesn’t jump off the page, it’s backed by a 3.58 FIP and his usual strong strikeout rate.

“This package also allows Toronto to get Jeff Hoffman and his $12.7 million salary for 2027 off the books. He has been pitching well of late, but with Louie Varland supplanting him in the closer’s role, he is a pricey setup arm looking ahead to next year.”

In return for these two pitchers, the Cubs would be sending two of their top 10 prospects, Owen Ayers and Kaleb Wing.

On the surface, this would certainly give Chicago a nice dose of healthy arms for their starting rotation and bullpen. Both Gausman and Hoffman are former All-Stars, but each are having down years.

Gausman is 4-10 with a 4.51 ERA in 22 starts while Hoffman is 6-7 with a 4.02 ERA in 50 appearances (with five saves).

That being said, both have experience with deep postseason runs and could bring some valuable experience to a young Cubs roster. Perhaps a change of scenery would also help them turn their years around.
