The Chicago Cubs made it known that they wanted to acquire multiple pitchers ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline. With that deadline coming up quickly (at 5:00 PM CT today), there have been a flurry of moves across baseball.

On Sunday night, Chicago made one of the more noteworthy trades, landing two-time All-Star right-handed starter Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays. He is 5-10 with a 4.39 ERA in what has been a down year for the long-time veteran.

And on Monday, hours ahead of the deadline, the Cubs got a second starting pitcher.

Earlier in the afternoon, it was reported that the Cubs had come to an agreement to trade for left-handed Los Angeles Angels starter Reid Detmers. He had been linked to Chicago for a long time.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a false report. Instead, the Cubs have traded for left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins:

For a pitching staff that has been decimated by injuries all year long, this acquisition is a bit of a head-scratcher. Garrett first had Tommy John surgery in 2017 when he was in the minors. He had it again in December of 2024 and missed all of 2025 as a result.

In two starts since his return from injury this year, he is 0-1 with a 14.56 ERA.

That being said, Garrett is under club control through the 2028 season. Chicago wanted a controllable starter, and they got one. Whether or not he can stay healthy is a different question altogether.

Garrett has a 16-20 record and 4.16 ERA for his career.
