The Chicago Bears know who their starting right tackle will be for years to come. Back in 2023, they selected Darnell Wright with the 10th overall pick in the NFL Draft, and has played 49 out of a possible 51 games there. Earlier today, it was reported that Chicago has inked him to a four-year $116 million contract extension ($93 million guaranteed).
What is not yet determined, though, is who will be Chicago’s starting left tackle in 2026, much less in the years beyond. Indeed, it has been a position that the Bears have struggled to fill with players who can consistently perform well and stay healthy.

Before practice on Tuesday, Bears head coach Ben Johnson spoke with the media. During his session, he was asked about the left tackle competition between Braxton Jones and Jedrick Willis:
“Hopefully it’s a really difficult decision for us.”

“Before [Willis] got hurt, he was a really powerful player. And so, it’s hard to say that yet. Hopefully we’ll see over the course of the next few days, next couple of weeks, if that continues to be the case… over the last four days, it’s been pretty good.
“Braxton has been great… I think we got a really good group of guys that will continue to ascend, to get better. So hopefully it will be a really difficult decision for us.”
Obviously, Johnson is hoping that the decision is difficult because multiple players are performing so well, rather than vise versa.
Of course, the left tackle position will be vital in protecting franchise quarterback Caleb Williams. Regardless of who wins the starting job, their job on offense is arguably the most vital one.
