The San Francisco 49ers appear to be leading the league in injury trouble, but the Chicago Bears don’t feel that far behind as issues accrue before their first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on August 15.
The Bears had worrying updates on Montez Sweat and Braxton Jones in addition to wide receiver Luther Burden III having a scare during Saturday’s practice.
Per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears had Jedrick Wills and Theo Benedet competing for the starting left tackle spot as Jones deals with a knee injury from Thursday’s practice. Sweat was nowhere to be seen.
“Early signs are it’s a day for Jedrick Wills and Theo Benedet at left tackle,” Biggs posted on X. “I have not seen Braxton Jones yet. He suffered a minor knee injury on Thursday. Have yet to spot DE Montez Sweat, who also exited early on Thursday.”

The injuries to Sweat and Jones were concerning enough amid a number of issues in the secondary, but the Bears have another worrying situation to monitor with Burden, who was seen limping off the practice field with a trainer on Saturday.

Per Courtney Cronin of ESPN, Burden and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson “got tangled up” before falling on the grass. Stevenson returned to practice while Burden limped inside.
“Luther Burden and Tyrique Stevenson got tangled up in their final rep and both fell awkwardly to the ground,” Cronin posted on X. “Stevenson was able to stay at practice after a trainer rubbed some ointment on his low back while Burden walked into the building a little slowly but under his own power.”
The good news is that Burden was able to walk off the field under his own power, though the receiver has a significant injury list since joining Chicago. Burden is expected to compete with Rome Odunze for the WR1 job, and his health is crucial for the offense’s success this season.
