Chicago White Sox second baseman Chase Meidroth has been absent the last two games. He missed the series finale on Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians and sat out again during the opener Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds. At this time frame it is unclear how long he will remain out of the lineup for, but by all accounts the issue appears to be minor.

When speaking with reporters, Meidroth said he initially injured his wrist on a swing last Friday. He played the following day, but the discomfort continued to worsen. Rather than risk making the injury worse by continuing to play through it, the decision was made to give him some time off and try to “nip it in the bud” before it became a bigger issue.

While no official diagnosis has been provided for Meidroth’s wrist issue, he did indicate that he underwent an MRI and received a cortisone injection. More importantly, he confirmed that he does not have a hamate fracture, a relatively common wrist injury among baseball players that can result in an extended absence and often requires surgery.
For now, the hope is that the combination of rest and the cortisone injection will be enough to get Meidroth’s wrist feeling better without turning this into a prolonged absence. For a White Sox team counting on Meidroth, the priority now is simple: give his wrist the time it needs to heal now and have him on the field for the stretch run of the season and hopefully the post season.
