Bears rookie Malik Muhammad addresses mistakes in preseason debut

The Chicago Bears sat most of their starters in Saturday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. Ben Johnson and his staff made the decision that paved the way for backups to gain valuable experience, with some making the most of the opportunity. Malik Muhammad was one of them, who played both at nickel and on the outside.

Chicago selected the 21-year-old at No. 124 in the fourth round. He enjoyed a strong three-year collegiate career with the Texas Longhorns. While he’ll likely provide the team with depth at the position rather than starting immediately, he could receive chances as the season progresses.

Muhammad recorded five tackles, including three solo efforts in the 34-10 win. However, he also committed some mistakes during his time on the field.

The Texas native acknowledged his shortcomings and admitted that he hates to make mistakes during games. He allowed an eight-yard reception in the second quarter and received a flag for holding. However, Muhammad stressed that what’s important is to bounce back and get it right in the next opportunity.

“So that’s the thing about me, I don’t want to make no mistakes,” Muhammad said. “Just talking to guys like Jalen Johnson or Coby Bryant or even like Josh Blackwell, and I’m going to get a little bit, some more of the other guys who’ve been here for a long time who have been playing in the league for a long time. They just tell you, man, they getting paid just like you are.

They didn’t get drafted or they’re not on a team for no reason. So you’re going to make mistakes, you’re going to give up plays. Just make the next play a best play.”

Johnson will likely give the starters some run but will continue to play the reserves and backups more. That would give Muhammad more chances to show his true worth. The Bears’ defense, particularly the secondary, strengthened in the offseason. The team will rely heavily on the unit next season to give Caleb Williams and the offense more opportunities to score.
