The Chicago Bears have a pretty good idea of who their top two running backs are going to be. D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, of course, have those top spots locked up. However, the Bears are still in search of a third-string back to complete their backfield.

Among those competing for the third running back job are Roschon Johnson and Salvon Ahmed. The latter has not appeared in an NFL regular season game in years, and had two rushed for 17 yards in Chicago’s 34-10 preseason win over the Cleveland Browns.

After the game on Saturday, head coach Ben Johnson revealed what Ahmed and every other running back hoping to make the roster has to do in order to make the final cut.

Yeah, we feel good about those top two backs right now and where they’re at. So, the battle for three, four, five, whatever that looks like, a lot comes down to special teams. A lot comes down to how do you separate yourself from those top two guys? What’s your skillset? How’s it different? He’s got that slashing mentality where he’s hard to bring down in space, and that showed up again today. Showed up in practice really throughout camp so far.

“We’ll continue to challenge him to find a defined role there on special teams where he can help us out the most there. And then pass protection, how do we continue to improve? When you’re a little bit smaller as a running back… that’s always what I’m looking for is, how well, how stout are we holding up to a blitzing linebacker as well.”

As one can see, Ahmed and all the other running backs behind the first two on the roster need to show they can play special teams and pick up blitzing linebackers on passing plays.

Ahmed has not appeared in an NFL regular season game since 2023, and has spent the last two seasons on various practice squads.
