The Chicago Bears are adding help at defensive end before the regular season.
The Bears entered training camp wanting to evaluate their defensive line before making trades or signings on the defensive line. The pass-rush was subpar last season, and the team made no notable moves during the offseason to improve the defensive line.
On Sunday, the Bears brought in defensive end Marcus Davenport for a workout.
Per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Chicago is expected to sign the veteran defensive end.
“The Bears are expected to sign veteran defensive lineman Marcus Davenport, sources tell CBS Sports,” Zenitz posted on X. “Former first-round pick with 43 career starts, 165 career tackles, and 25 career sacks. Was a starter for the Lions last year.”

The Saints selected Davenport in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, so Davenport has ties to Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who was his defensive coordinator and head coach with the New Orleans. Davenport earned PFWA All-Rookie Honors, recording 4.5 sacks and 2021 tackles in his first season.
Davenport, 29, has appeared in 77 games and started 43 games in his NFL career. He’s made 165 tackles and 25 sacks in his first eight years in the league. He’s spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions. He started in seven games for the Lions last season and recorded 14 tackles and one sack.
Davenport can play a key role in the rotation at defensive end. The Bears have been working on a few things to fix the pass rush this offseason, teaching better technique for defensive linemen and hoping the secondary can create coverage sacks.
However, the Bears have several injury issues in the secondary. Based on the performance of the Bears defensive line against the Cleveland Browns in their first preseason game on Saturday, the defense needs some help at defensive end to make a pass rush.
Davenport will help with that. It remains to be seen if the Bears will look to add for more help at defensive tackles the team reported checked on the availability of Tampa Bay Buccaneers disgruntled star Vita Vea.
