The Chicago Cubs have had more than their fair share of significant injuries this season. Fans are all too familiar with the health struggles of Chicago’s pitching staff. At one point, they had enough arms on the injured list to fill a Major League roster.

On a positive note, though, the Cubs have been able to hang in the thick of the National League playoff race. At 72-53, they are in second place in the NL Central, 5.0 games out of first place. However, they also possess the fourth-best record in the NL and have a five-game lead for the top Wild Card spot.

In other words, despite their injury issues, Chicago is very likely going to the postseason. They will have to get there, though, without Dansby Swanson.

Over the weekend, it was revealed that Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson suffered an oblique injury. On Monday, after getting imaging done. Chicago learned that it is a grade-two oblique strain. This kind of injury has a recovery timetable of about 4-6 weeks:

This means, of course, that Swanson is going to be out for most of, if not all, the rest of the regular season. That certainly is not the best news.

However, as Jesse Rogers notes, it does give him time to return for the playoffs. While he has struggled at the plate this year, Swanson’s defense at shortstop is still arguably the best in Major League Baseball. If the Cubs are to make a deep postseason run, they will want him on the field.

Swanson is hitting .216/.300/.404 with 18 home runs and 66 RBI this season.
