The Chicago Cubs spent much of the early part of the season wondering when Pete Crow-Armstrong was going to snap out of his long slump. While he had the franchise’s first 30-30 season since Sammy Sosa last season, he hit just .216/.262/.372 with six home runs and 24 RBI after last year’s All-Star break.
In March/April of this season, Crow-Armstrong hit just .241/.307/.362 with three home runs and 13 RBI. In May, he hit .233/.344/.418 with four home runs and 13 more RBI.
But then the calendar flipped to June, and PCA took off. That month, he hit .381/.468/.781 with 11 home runs and 20 RBI. After having been moved down to ninth in the batting order, he was put back in the leadoff spot and has not looked back.

In July, PCA hit .278/.400/.611 with six home runs and 17 RBI. So far in August, he has a slash line of .273/.377/.636 with six home runs and 15 RBI (and the month is only half over).
On Monday night, the Cubs centerfielder took the first pitch he saw for a leadoff home run. Then, in the bottom of the tenth inning, he hit a walk-off bomb for his second longshot on the night, giving him another 30-30 season.
Afterwards, his teammates left no doubt who should win the National League MVP Award.
“I don’t think I’ve ever met a player like that “where you watch him play, and make the fantastic plays that he does, and you’re not really surprised,” Shota Imanaga said. “But it’s the expectations that you may have, or a fan may have for him, and he always passes it. It’s been incredible.”
“I’m glad he’s on my team,” said Jacob Webb. “I’m going to say Pete’s my MVP. Definitely, I feel like he’s earned it. I think he’s that good of a player.”
Cubs manager Craig Counsell added, “This might be his best game in the big leagues right here. It was an amazing game.”
So far in 2026, Crow-Armstrong is hitting .281/.379/.550 with 30 home runs, 78 RBI, and 31 stolen bases. He also leads Major League Baseball with a 7.7 WAR.
It has gotten to the point where many believe that, since Shohei Ohtani is not pitching right now due to injury, PCA is the favorite to win the NL MVP Award.
He almost certainly deserves it.
