The Chicago Bears were gashed up front by the Cincinnati Bengals during their joint practice on Thursday.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters after Saturday’s 34-10 win over the Cleveland Browns that this week would be crucial for his offense to face the Bengals and their new-look defense. No addition was bigger for the Bengals than the trade they made for two-time All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
Per Sean Hammond of the Chicago Tribune, Lawrence made a big impact on the Bears rushing attack, which was missing running back Kyle Monangai due to a knee injury.
The appearance of “Sexy Dexy” was felt in the passing game, with pressure coming from the inside forcing Caleb Williams to throw an interception to Bengals cornerback Jalen Davis.
“Bengals CB Jalen Davis picks off Caleb Williams at the end of practice,” Hammond posted on X. “Again, pressure from the inside. Tough day for the Bears interior today. But Ben Johnson will certainly be excited to learn from the tape.”

The Bears interior offensive line will look different with Garrett Bradbury starting at center after Drew Dalman retired. Chicago will need the interior line to look much better before the start of the regular season than they did on Thursday.
Williams did have some long completions, but the story of the day was the Lawrence mauling the Bears offensive line. It was a crucial chance for Bears head coach Ben Johnson to evaluate the offense, because the starters sat out against the Cleveland Browns during Saturday’s game.
“We’ll see what it looks like going against a couple of new opponents,” Johnson told reporters after the game on Saturday. “I’m excited to go down to Cincinnati, and they’ve got a lot of new talent on defense that we’re going to have to be on our Ps and Qs if we want to have success against them.
“That to me is going to help us really shape where we’re at as an offense right now.”
For now, the Bears have a lot to clean up on offense.
