Bears QB Caleb Williams speaks out on Ben Johnson’s preseason decision

Caleb Williams played for the first time during Saturday’ 27-9 loss. He saw action in the Chicago Bears’ first series against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium. While the lack of playing may be frustrating for others, the star quarterback trusts Ben Johnson’s decision.

The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner completed 2-of-5 passes for 28 yards. Case Keenum took after until halftime and went 9-of-17 for 119 yards. Meanwhile, Miller Moss received ample playing time, finishing the game and going 13-of-21 for 103 yards.

Johnson and his staff are likely keeping Williams as fresh as possible for the start of the regular season. The Bears are coming off a grueling 2025 campaign, with Williams leading the franchise to an NFC North crown and reaching the Divisional Round.

Williams addressed the media after the game. He opened up on Johnson’s decision to pull him out early and also shared that they have had a lot of conversations.

“Whatever coach decides is good for me,” Williams said. “I would say a lot of good conversations and talks with coach, a lot of good conversations and talks with wide receivers and (Chicago center) Garrett (Bradbury) and all of that. Just find ways to be on the same page so that when September 13th comes around that we’re rolling and yeah, I think we are.

“And then, there’s times where you’ll have a down day or times where you’ll lose a game like today, and you’ve got to go back and look at the tape and be truth-tellers about yourselves and look in the mirror first.”

Analysts expect Johnson to stick with his rotation in the first two preseason games. The Bears will take on the Tennessee Titans on Saturday to wrap up their slate, and Williams will once again likely see limited minutes. Their regular season will commence on Sept. 13 on the road versus the Carolina Panthers.
