Bears veteran tells the truth on Caleb Williams-Ben Johnson relationship

Ben Johnson played a significant role in helping bring out the best from Caleb Williams last season. Their relationship has continued to grow stronger in the build up the 2026 campaign. Many have noticed how their forged an even stronger bond, including Cole Kmet.

The veteran tight end is entering the season likely set for a smaller role than he had last year. Analysts expect Colston Loveland to start, with Kmet serving as the TE2. However, he also has a connection with the starting quarterback, which the team will utilize at different points of 2026.

Johnson and Williams will be the key to Chicago maintaining or surpassing its success last year. The Bears turned doubters into believers by winning the NFC North and reaching the Divisional Round with a rookie head coach and third-year quarterback.

Kmet highlighted that the relationship of the head coach-quarterback duo has worked well for the rest of the team. He also emphasized that it has translated to better communication during huddles.

“I think it’s things I’ve said in the past, like operation, the huddle, is just continuing to get better and better,” Kmet said. “And you can tell his rapport with coach has just grown so much since really a year ago. So you’re just seeing that growth in the huddle each and every day.”

The Bears are relying heavily on a mostly-intact roster and the continuous development of Williams. However, the teams veterans, including Kmet, will need to guide the younger players to ensure that everyone is on the same page. They will play their third and final preseason game on Saturday against the Tennessee Titans. Only two will remain after the matchup before the team opens its regular season campaign on Sept. 13 versus the Carolina Panthers.
