Stephanie White compares Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell to legendary WNBA duo

Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell have broken several WNBA records this season. They are the highest scoring duo and have combined for the most 30-plus points each in the same game in league history. Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White has seen their greatness firsthand and compared them to a legendary WNBA duo.

Clark and Mitchell once again performed at their best on Friday. They scored 34 points each and combined for eight rebounds, 16 assists and 10 three-pointers. Aliyah Boston and Makayla Timpson chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively, in the 111-91 win. It was Indiana’s second consecutive win after a two-game skid, improving its record to 26-14 for the season.

Indiana Fever: Stephanie White sees similarities between Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and legendary Mercury duo

White addressed the media after the game. A reporter asked her if she can compare her superstar backcourt duo to any tandem in WNA history. She mentioned Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter.

“The only one I can think of is DT and Cappie,” White said. “I mean, you think back to those Phoenix days, they were a dynamic backcourt that could both up big numbers, could both get their own shot, could get other people involved. But it’s been a long time since we’ve seen the explosiveness of two players like Kelsey and Caitlin.”

Taurasi and Pondexter played alongside each other with the Phoenix Mercury from 2006 to 2009. They won two championships together and established their partnership as one of the most dynamic in women’s basketball ever. The duo also won an Olympic gold medal while playing for the United States national team at the 2008 Olympics.

Meanwhile, White, Clark, Mitchell and the Fever have three weeks before they face the Toronto Tempo to resume their season. The WNBA will enter its FIBA World Cup break, giving teams and players time to rest ahead of the final stretch of the regular season and the start of the playoffs. Clark will play in the tournament, with White serving as an assistant coach for Team USA.
