‘A lot of work to be done’: Bears QB Tyson Bagent gets honest on Zavion Thomas

Zavion Thomas impressed during Saturday’s preseason game versus the Tennessee Titans. He connected with Tyson Bagent for a 97-yard touchdown and left a good impression on the Chicago Bears coaching staff. However, the quarterback knows that there’s still a lot of work ahead for the rookie wide receiver.

Thomas finished with five receptions for 140 yards and one TD. He showed off his elite route running and strong hands, playing a key role in Chicago’s 24-15 win.

Bagent, on the other hand, completed 16-of-17 passes for 208 yards, two TDs and zero interceptions. He added two rushes for 21 yards. The Bears finished their preseason slate with a 2-1 record, beating the Cleveland Browns and losing to the Cincinnati Bengals.

“I think that he knows what’s ahead for him,” Bagent said. “This is no easy ride, being in the NFL, no matter what position you are, no matter how fast you are. So I think he has a good understanding of there’s a lot of work to be done, but it’s also good to have success early on. So because he is fast, you’ve got a fast guy with confidence. I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all, but I think that he’s well aware of the workload that is ahead for him.”

Thomas is competing with Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III and Jahdae Walker in the wide receiver room. He’ll likely see limited playing time in the upcoming season. However, he has proven his worth in college and showed that he belongs in the NFL. The 22-year-old could get some opportunities to shine as the campaign progresses.
