Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) reacts in the first half against the Dallas Wings

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark faced Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks twice during her collegiate career. The then-Iowa Hawkeyes guard owns a 1-1 record against them, and the veteran head coach witnessed her greatness firsthand. Staley’s comments about Clark’s professional ceiling resurfaced, where she made a bold prediction.

Clark is enjoying her best WNBA campaign. She is averaging a career-high 22.5 points, along with 3.9 rebounds, 8.4 assists and 1.0 steals through 36 games. The three-time All-Star is one of the biggest reasons that have tied Indiana for fourth in the standings with a 26-14 record. Clark is third in the league in scoring and first in assists.

She is set to represent the U.S. at the FIBA World Cup. Clark will team up with Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers, Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, among others. Her Fever teammate, Aliyah Boston, is also part of the team.

Dawn Staley made a major Caitlin Clark prediction

Staley appeared on the “Around the W” podcast in June 2025. She boldly claimed that Clark will end her career as one of the greatest in WNBA history and added that it won’t take her long to establish herself as a legend.

“I would say Caitlin will go down as probably one of the best players to ever grace the league,” Staley said. “And she’s going to probably do it in half of the time that it takes any other great player. When you’re able to shoot the ball as well as she does, her passing ability, her court vision is second to none. Her ability to deliver the basketball makes her like a triple threat. She rebounds the basketball, she’s a big guard.  People don’t know she’s legitimately 6-feet.

“So she sees over you, she’s able to get her shot off on anyone. And I think the fact that they (Fever) surrounded her with such great talent, a triple-double is going to be a normal thing for Caitlin. She is third all-time for triple doubles and this is her second year in. I don’t even think she played 40 games. Maybe no. She’s probably played 40, less than 45 games.”

Clark already has four career triple-doubles and has the most 30-plus point, 10-plus assist games in WNBA history. She is one of the favorites to win the MVP award this season in only her third year. The 24-year-old is still far from reaching her peak, which is bad news for the rest of the competition.
