Ryan Poles reveals exactly why Chicago Bears released former 3rd-round pick

Cutting the roster down to 53 players is never an easy task. Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles was forced to make numerous crucial decisions. One of them was releasing former third-round pick Kiran Amegadjie.

For Poles, it came down to the tackles Chicago had already established. Ultimately, Amegadjie didn’t do enough to keep his place, via Kevin Fishbain of the Athletic.

“I would go back to the (offensive line) room and the competition,” Poles said. “I had a good conversation with him at the end. It really just wasn’t a level of consistency that we were looking for.”

The Philadelphia Eagles ultimately signed Amegadjie to their practice squad, officially ending his run with the Bears. After being selected in the third-round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the tackle ended up appearing in six games for the franchise, starting one. All of those appearances came during Amegadjie’s rookie season, as injuries took a massive bite out of his career.

Now, the Bears have moved on. The offensive lineman will remain a ‘what if’ in franchise history due to his draft pedigree.

Chicago Bears preferred other tackle options 

Darnell Wright is the unquestioned starter at right tackle. Over on the left side though is a different story. Amegadjie was a part of a position battle that went four deep at times during training camp.

Ultimately, Braxton Jones is slated to open the season at left tackle. Behind him will be Ozzy Trapilo, who made a shocking recovery from his patellar tendon surgery. He may not play early on, but the fact he is on the 53-man roster is a good sign.

Theo Benedet will serve as a swing tackle for Chicago. He has experience playing left tackle for the franchise and will be tasked with playing right should Wright ever get injured.

The Bears preferred all three options compared to what Amegadjie brought to the table. He’ll now try to revitalize his career in Philadelphia and Chicago focuses on protecting quarterback Caleb Williams.
