The Chicago Bears are once again expected to unleash their two-headed rushing attack on the league in 2026. However, that plan can only work if both D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai are on the field.
That hasn’t been the case for Monangai, who has missed time with a hyperextended knee. There still isn’t definitive word that the running back will play in Week 1. But Swift is at least confident Monangai will be back sooner rather than later, via Sean Hammond of the Chicago Tribune.
“He’s out there working,” Swift said. “I watched him work, run today. He looked good to me. He’s in good spirits, but (I’m) just telling him to take it one day at a time. Nobody’s rushing him. He’ll come back when he’s ready.”
The Bears will want to see Monangai advance to live practice before officially clearing him. He’s running out of time to do so. But at the very least, when the running back does return, Swift is ready to pick up where they left off collectively.
Where they left off was the third-best rushing offense in the league, averaging 144.5 yards per game. It will be a tall task trying to replicate that performance, but Chicago remains confident in their running back duo.
As a rookie, Monangai rushed 169 times for 783 yards and five touchdowns. Despite being a seventh-round pick, he quickly found a place in head coach Ben Johnson’s offense. The Bears are hoping he remains a factor in their run game for the foreseeable future.
Chicago’s first order of business is simply getting Monangai back on the gridiron. Swift will remain optimistic throughout the process. But ultimately, only the running back playing in Week 1 would silence all doubts.
