Bears TE Colston Loveland comments on Ben Johnson’s behavior

Colston Loveland has a lot of respect for Ben Johnson. The second-year tight end has seen how intense he is during practices and games, taking his job seriously. He also recently shared his thoughts about the Chicago Bears head coach’s behavior.

Loveland is set for a bigger role in 2026, as he’ll be Chicago’s TE1. He showed last season that he belongs in the NFL and that the franchise didn’t waste its No. 10 overall pick on him. The Michigan Wolverines product lived up to Johnson and coaching staff’s expectations. He finished his rookie year with 58 receptions for 713 yards and six touchdowns, sending a message to the rest of the competition.

Loveland flourished immediately under Johnson and established himself as one of the NFL’s best young stars. The team enters the 2026 season with an even higher goal after winning the NFC North and reaching the Divisional Round last year.

Loveland was asked who between Johnson and his former college coach, Jim Harbaugh, is “crazier.” The 22-year-old said it’s Johnson, citing his love for football.

“It’s tough to say,” Loveland said. “They’re just so similar in a lot of ways but different, and the age gap I think does something as well. But I think coach Johnson is the crazier, the look in his eyes, especially if you mess a play up. He’s staring you down and letting you know. He’s intense, and his on-and-off switch is crazy. I don’t think anyone loves football more than he does.”

Johnson’s second-year at the helm is more challenging than his first. Chicago faces the league’s toughest schedule and will play seven primetime games. Its slate starts on Sept. 13 against the Carolina Panthers, followed by a home matchup with the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2. Loveland’s production will be crucial to the team’s success, especially after becoming one of Williams’ favorite targets last year.
