Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

Stephanie White is a big reason for the Indiana Fever’s turnaround this season. They started 5-5 but are now 26-14 and currently fifth in the standings. She has a talented lineup headlined by Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston. The veteran head coach recently opened up about what’s the most satisfying part of coaching her team.

White started her head coaching career with the Fever in 2015. She then moved to the Vanderbilt Commodores in 2016 and stayed with the program until 2021. White returned to the WNBA in 2023, signing a deal with the Connecticut Sun. Indiana hired her for a second stint the following year.

She and the Fever are currently fifth in the standings. They have the same record as the Atlanta Dream, who owns the tiebreaker. However, there are still four games left on their schedule and they are only one game behind the Las Vegas Aces for third place.

Stephanie White discusses what’s the rewarding part of coaching

White opened up about which part of coaching brings her the most satisfaction. She stressed about seeing her players improve and helping the team reach its goal. The 49-year-old also expressed gratefulness for being in her position.

“It’s why we do what we do,” White said. “You want to help them be the best that they can be, help your team be the best that (it) can be. And when you see that, you take a lot of pride in them and their individual accountability and ability to grow. You see the work that they put in, and the fruits of their labor, and and that’s rewarding in itself.

“I think more than anything, when you see them start to feel confident in it and the things that that they’re capable of, and the things that you know that our team is going to need to be successful, and they take pride in it. When you start to see them own it, that’s when, as a coach, you feel the most satisfaction.”

White and Co. will be back in action on Sept. 18 for a road matchup with the Toronto Tempo. A two-game homestand follows before they wrap up their regular season with an away game versus the Minnesota Lynx on Sept. 24.
